This was my first ever experience on a sleeper train. I’ve travelled via boat, tuk tuk, camel, I’ve even hitched a ride on the back of an open lorry in Sri Lanka, but this was definitely very different to all of them and not what I was expecting!
Without realising, I’ve managed to time my trip with the Bucharest Music and Film festival. The lovely friend I’m staying with, Andreea, plays in an orchestra, so naturally we’ve been to a few shows, which was so much fun. The first event we went to was an open air concert, featuring a full orchestra playing famous film soundtracks live. The second event was a night full of famous Romanian pop songs, which Andreea played in. I literally had no clue what was happening at any point, but I was surrounded by new friends and it was hilarious so it was all good, and after we stayed out in the Old Town til the early hours (I’m feeling the consequences of that now). I’ve officially started my adventure round Europe! It was a long start too – I got up in England at 4am and finally crashed out at my friend’s house in Bucharest around midnight. Continue reading
I’ve been lucky enough to go to the beautiful Moorish palace and fortress complex and gardens 3 times now, and I’m still not sick of it. I notice new things every time I go. There’s so much detail and colour everywhere, it’s gorgeous. For that reason, it’s also very popular, so you have to be mindful about booking as they’re very strict about how many people are allowed inside at any one time! Continue reading
I’m off in 2 days, I’m so excited! …And I have so much to do. Here is what I’m getting up to, to make sure I’m ready to go:
When I went to New York everyone I talked to had an opinion of Things I Should Definitely Do. Everyone tends to have a bucket list when it comes to NYC, and that list normally includes Times Square, the Statue of Liberty and Central Park, all of which were recommended to me numerous times. One thing I was told that was contrary to everything I’d been told though, was to not climb the Empire State building. Instead, I was to try the Rockefeller. Continue reading
This September I’m getting a one way flight to Romania, so I can visit one of my old shipmate’s in Bucharest. After that… well, the plan is more subjective.
I’ve got a rough plan that looks something like this: Continue reading
We timed the evening of our first full day in Yangon perfectly: visiting the Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset. The complex is already bursting with colour from its decorations, flower offerings and the towering central gold stupa, but the pink-orange skies and the rose hues glinting from all the gold leaf is truly something else. Continue reading
I have two bucket lists: a travel one, and an activities one. With a helicopter ride over Cape Town, I managed to tick off something from both! I’ve always wanted a go in a helicopter. They just look awesome and so badass, featuring in all good action movies. Continue reading
As my local guide, Moh Moh, told me ‘Now is the best ever time to visit this country’. Myanmar is on the verge of a huge change politically, and soon could change in many other ways as well. Tourism is slowly returning to this beautiful country – and now really is the best ever time to go. It’s safe, it’s unspoilt and full of wonderful places to explore. Continue reading
